Abstract

Seed dockage sieves for sex-separation of Pine sawfly cocoons.

Abstract

Describes the use of slotted sieves, designed for sorting seeds by size, for rapid separation of male cocoons of Diprion similis from female cocoons, which are needed in large numbers in laboratory studies of pheromone chemistry and sex attraction in this insect. Sieves with slots 11/64 in wide allowed nearly all male cocoons to pass through, and retained most female s. Although some further hand sorting was necessary, an over-all reduction in sorting time of ca. 80% was achieved.
