Abstract

Studies on the rostellar hooks of Macr-acanthorhynchus hirudinaceus (Acanthocephala) from swine.

Abstract

The internal and external morphology of the proboscis hooks of Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus were studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Light microscope sections revealed a PAS-Alcian positive substance within a central lumen of the non-staining hook material. Using an Epon-infiltration technique which reduced distortion due to dehydration, it was observed that the hooks are characteristically panduriform at the base and almost circular at the extreme tip. On the outer margin of the hook is a tube-like opening which leads into a groove. The groove and tube were absent in specimens oí Neoechinorhynchus sp. and Echinorhynchus thecatus. M.R.N.S.
