Carboxydis-mutase activity in plants with and without β-carboxylation photosynthesis.

Abstract

A comparison was made of the activity of carboxy-dismutase (RuDP carboxylase) in Distichlis spicata, Paspalum distichum, Zea mays, Amaranthus edulis, Atriplex semibaccata and A. rosea, which possess the β-carboxylation (C4-dicarboxylic acid) pathway for; photosynthesis, with that in Elymus mollis, Mimulus cardinalis, Solanum dulcamara, Plantago lanceolata, Solidago spathulata and Atriplex patula which lack this pathway. Contrary to earlier findings, no marked differences in levels of this enzyme were found be-tween the 2 groups. Chloroplast-containing vascular bundle sheath cells, present only in the former group, apparently contained relatively high carboxydismutase activity.-R.B.
