Abstract

The importance of leeches in the life cycle of the order Strigeidida (Trematoda).

Abstract

9 species of leeches collected in Slovakia and Moravia, Czechoslovakia, were examined for strigeid metacercariae. Apatemon gracilis was recovered from Hirudo medicinalis, Haemopis sanguisuga, Erpobdella octoculata and E. testacea; Cotylurus sp. from Glossiphonia complánata, H. sanguisuga, Hemiclepsis marginata and E. octoculata; Prohemistomulum opacun from Haemopis sanguisuga, Hirudo medicinalis and E. octoculata. Prohemistomulum sp. from H. medicinalis and Haemopis sanguisuga has not been described previously. Apart from A. gracilis these are new records for Czechoslovakia. No Theromyzon tesselata, Glossi-phonia heteroclita and Piscícola geómetra were found to be infected. M.B-B.
