Studies of the tolerance of Atriplex species. I. Environmental characteristics and plant response of A. vesicaria, A. nummularia and A. semibaccata.
The effects of soil and climatic factors on growth of Atriplex vesicaria, A. nummularia, A. semibaccata and Kochia georgii were studied in the Riverine Plain area, New South Wales. In spite of the wide range of temperature, humidity and evaporation rates, low and variable rainfall, and the nutritional imbalance of Na and K in this area, these species were well adapted and had a generally high leaf/stem ratio. They were summer growers. A. semibaccata was dormant in winter, but the other Atriplex spp. remained green in winter, although growing very little.-A.M.H.
