Abstract

A monograph covering anatomy, morphology and development of Bamboo plants in their vegetative, reproductive, and seedling phases; a detailed description, including uses, of 7 'elite' species suggested for further study because of features of scientific interest or industrial promise (Arundinaria amabilis, Bambusa vulgaris, Dendrocalamus strictus, Gigantochloa verticillata, Guadua angustifolia, Melocanna baccifera and Ochlandra travancorica), propagation by means of seed, rhizomes, culm sections, layers, bulbils etc. ; flowering and fruiting behaviour in Bamboos of different genera and species; and Bamboo taxonomy. A glossary (adapted for the special characteristics of Bamboo), a generic key to Bamboos cultivated in the U.S.A. and Puerto Rico, and a list of Bamboos available in the U.S.A. are appended.
