Spray control of the fusiform rust [Cronartium fusiforme] in forest-tree nurseries.
Sprays containing Dithane 2-78, Ferbam, and Ziram + Santomerse S and Goodrite Type 4 without a spreader, reduced fusiform-rust infection in nursery beds of Pinus caribaea and P. taeda in 1947 to less than 3% compared with 5% for Bordeaux mixture with Santomerse S and 13.4% for unsprayed controls. Severe damage to seedlings resulted from spraying with Phygon. Delay in the date of sowing reduced the amount of rust. One spraying with Ferbam and Ziram in 1949, applied just before 7 days of cool, moist weather, reduced infection more effectively than 7 subsequent treatments applied during a dry spell. It appears that rust infection may occur as Pine seeds germinate under burlap. From author's summary.
