Abstract

In controlled trials lemon trees receiving OP-M-Fe-Mn or Fe-DTPU chelates [not defined] at 40-50 ml/tree showed resistance to mal secco [Deuterophoma tracheiphila] compared with the control, and 2 months after artificial infection no symptoms of the disease were observed on the treated trees...

Abstract

This lemon variety on its own rootstock and on seedlings of Duncan [grapefruit] was characterized by prolonged and uninterrupted growth, whereas on Poncirus trifoliata and Ponderosa [lemon] the separate growth phases in the annual development cycle were more restricted and the plants produced...

Abstract

In studies with plants growing in unfertilized soil the greatest N and P contents were found in young persimmon leaves, but they declined towards the end of the growing period. The K content was almost unchanged. Under NPK fertilization N accumulated readily in young leaves, less readily and again...

Abstract

Varieties with resistance to Deuterophoma tracheiphila had a much higher total and protein N content than susceptible varieties and showed little reduction in this after infection. Free amino acid content was higher in the susceptible varieties and fell after infection.

Abstract

The varieties studied differed in response to artificial infection with the fungi causing gummosis, viz. Macrophoma mantegazziana, Phomopsis [Diaporthe] citri and Sphaeropsis malorum [Botryosphaeria obtusa]. Susceptible varieties showed a breakdown of the cortical tissue, darkening of the wood and...

Abstract

In 4-year trials a fertilizer dressing given as split applications twice or thrice annually increased cucumber respiration more than a similar dressing applied once. The cucumber ascorbic acid content was greatest in plants receiving 2 applications. The treatments had no effect on catalase activity.
