Abstract

Radiocarbon and cross-dating of wood remnants, soil analyses, annual ring chronologies and age structures for a virgin high-altitude P. sylvestris forest suggest that a closed forest began a decline in the 11th century or somewhat later, which continued until the mid-19th century.
