This chapter describes and illustrates the damage types (including the possible damaging agents) to stems, branches and twigs of coniferous woody plants: root and stem rot (Basidiomycota, Oomycota), vascular diseases (Ascomycota, Nematoda), feeding and boring signs on bark or into wood (insects), abiotic damage (frost, snow, ice, hail, wind, wounds, fire, mechanical damage), cankers (fungi), emergence or exit holes and galleries under bark (insects), twig boring (insects), maturation feeding (insects), rust canker (Pucciniales), feeding signs or attached scales (insects), galls (larva of Lepidoptera and Diptera), witches' brooms (fungi, hemiparasitic plants, insects, phytoplasmas, viruses), mammal and bird damage.
