Book cover for Sustainable animal agriculture.

This book with eighteen chapters draws together themes on sustainability that have emerged as the most pressing in recent years. The book addresses practical topics such as air quality, manure management, animal feeds, production efficiency, environmental sustainability, biotechnology issues, animal welfare concerns, societal impacts and an analysis of the data used to assess the economic sustaina...

Chapter 17 (Page no: 268)

Emerging contaminants in livestock manure: hormones, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes.

This chapter focuses on these emerging contaminants in livestock manure, viz., hormones, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. The chapter also provides brief discussion on the following topics: degradation of steroidal hormones in manure during storage; fate of hormones in manure following land application; impact of steroidal hormones in streams and rivers; best management practices to minimize loading to water; antibiotic use in livestock and the development of antibiotic resistance; and potential for runoff of antibiotics following land application of manure.
