Search Help
Both the Site Search and the Advanced Datasheet Search provide a Google-like experience. They are easy-to-use with the most relevant items returned towards the top of the results. There is also an Expert Search available for the datasheets where the user can use coding terms to increase the precision of the results returned
Site Search
This provides a general search across all content in the compendium. Use this if you want to find:
- All the information on a particular species
- Content in the library (including CABI Full Text articles), glossary or abstracts.
Do not use this for detailed searches of the datasheet content, when the Advanced Datasheet Search should be used.
Advanced Datasheet Search
This provides an easy-to-use search of the core database information found in full datasheets. Use this if you want to find:
- The pests and diseases of a particular crop (simply type in the crop name);
- The pests and diseases of a particular country/region (simply type in the country or region);
- The pests or diseases caused by specific taxonomic groups (simply type in e.g. pests, diseases, fungi, bacteria, viruses, insects, beetles or leafhoppers);
- The pests or diseases that attack a specific part of the plant (simply type in e.g. seeds, stems, roots, leaves, fruits);
- The pests or diseases that attack a particular plant stage (simply type in e.g. flowering, fruiting, "post harvest", seedling, "pre emergence").
Combinations of the above terms can be made but any Boolean operators used (AND, NOT, OR) must be capitalised, e.g. 'Sweden NOT France' to find the pests and diseases present in Sweden but not present in France.
Advanced Datasheet Search Examples
Presented below are a number of examples of how the Advanced Datasheet Search can be used to search the detailed datasheets in the Crop Protection Compendium.
1. To find pests that attack a particular crop
Pests of Musa (bananas)
Description: This search returns the pests that have been recorded on Musa.
Search string: Musa AND pest
2. To find pests that attack a particular crop in one country but do not occur in another country
Pests of Musa (bananas) that are present in Mexico but not in Cuba
Description: This search returns the pests of bananas that occur in Mexico but are not recorded as being present in Cuba.
Search string: Musa AND pest AND Mexico NOT Cuba
3. To find pests that damage a particular plant part
Pests that attack barley seed
Description: This search returns pests that attack the seeds of barley.
Search string: barley AND seed
4. To find specific pest types causing damage at a particular growth stage
Fungi causing damage to crops at the post harvest stage
Description: This search returns fungi that are reported to cause damage to crops at the post harvest stage.
Search string: "post harvest" AND fungi
SEARCH TIP: Place all Boolean operators in capitals e.g. AND, NOT, OR
SEARCH TIP: Add 'NOT host/crop' to any search to restrict to pest and disease datasheets
SEARCH TIP: Include terms that need to be searched as a string in inverted commas, e.g. "New Zealand"
Expert Search
Within the Advanced Search on the CPC, we have hidden additional metadata and a controlled vocabulary to increase the precision of important searches. We have produced a Controlled Vocabulary pdf to download. Use this additional feature when:
- You want to precisely find pests and diseases that attack the various parts and stages of a plant.
- You want to limit the search to a particular symptom that is visible on a crop.
In addition we have added a code system to particular parts of the datasheets. Use this additional feature to find:
- All the pests and pathogens of a particular crop - use the code 'hos' and then either the scientific name or preferred common name for the crop/host e.g. "hos rice" or "hos Oryza sativa"
- All the crops/hosts of a particular pest or pathogen - use the code 'pps' and then either the scientific name or preferred common name for the pest/pathogen e.g. "pps rice stem nematode" or "pps Ditylenchus angustus"
Please note that all the "inverted commas" are important when using the expert search and also Boolean operators must be capitalised.
Expert Search Examples
1. To find out which pests may be causing damage symptoms on your crop
Pests that cause seed rot on barley
Description: This search returns pests that cause seed rot symptoms on barley.
Search string: barley AND "seed rot"
2. To find pests that cause specific symptoms on a particular plant part on a particular crop
Pests that feed externally on wheat seed
Description: This search returns pests that feed externally on wheat grain.
Search string: "Seeds external feeding" AND wheat
3. To find all the pests and pathogens of a particular crop
Pests and pathogens of rice
Description: This search returns all the pests and pathogens recorded on rice, (you can use common or scientific names).
Search string: "hos Oryza sativa"
Search string: "hos rice"
4. To find all the crops/hosts of a particular pest/pathogen
Host species of the pest Ditylenchus angustus
Description: This search returns all the major and minor hosts that are listed for the species Ditylenchus angustus, (you can use common or scientific names).
Search string: "pps rice stem nematode"
Search string: "pps Ditylenchus angustus"
5. To find all the pests and pathogens of rice which are also present in India and cause stem rot
Pests and pathogens of rice, listed present in India that cause the symptoms of "stem rot"
Description: This search returns just those peat and pathogens that are found on rice and restricting it to just those species that have been recorded as present within India.
Search string: "hos rice" AND India AND "stem rot"
