Beyond farmers-first-and-last: the developmental farm model for accelerating agricultural growth in developing countries.

This paper examines the different approaches traditionally used in agriculture for technology transfer in South Asia and other developing regions, and advocates an alternative approach namely that of the developmental farm model. It has been found to be successful in an Indian context, where small-holder farmers are dominant. Such an approach takes the overall situation of the farmers into full consideration and addresses their multiple problems. A developmental farm model can help generate additional income and employment, maintain or enhance biodiversity and produce renewable energy at the farm level. Overall, its implementation can help improve the livelihood of farmers and address issues of climate change, thus it has the potential to accelerate agricultural growth in developing countries such as India.
