Chapter 9 (Page no: 144)

A roadmap for route development.

This chapter considers a proposed framework and guidelines for the creation, development and management of tourism routes and trails. The chapter first discusses the need for a framework and the utilization of themes and stories in route development. The remainder of the chapter presents a basic model for route development and discusses the stages involved, namely: determining the objectives; consultation and development of management structures; marketing of the route or trail; and managing visitors. A case study is presented of the Olive Oil Trail (Spain), which illustrates the concerns and objectives that trail developers are likely to have when working on tourism in an economically depressed rural setting.
