Origin and evolution.

This chapter describes the pineapple wild relatives, including their taxonomic status, ecology and distributions. The domesticated pineapples and their pre-Columbian distribution are discussed, as well as the domestication syndrome in the cultivated forms of Ananas comosus. Pineapple diversity and genetic relations among wild and cultivated forms are also explained.
