Introduction: use new genetic technologies and animal breeding methods carefully to avoid problems.

This book chapter provides an overview of how conventional animal breeding, GMOs, gene editing and performance enhancing pharmaceuticals are used to produce more productive farm animals. These methods are also used to change the appearance of dogs and enhance the performance of horses. Problems that occurred in pigs produced with conventional breeding are highlighted. Now there are new genetic tools that make it possible to create animals with new traits more easily. Genomic tests can be used to choose breeding animals and these tests are used to select sires that have genes for desirable traits such as improved feed conversion. However, there are always trade-offs, wherein selection for better feed conversion may be associated with lower fertility. GMO and gene editing methods will also speed up the process of genetic selection. New technologies, when used carefully, can provide great benefits.
