Predictive characterization methods for accessing and using CWR diversity.

This chapter reports and discusses the results of the application of the ecogeographical filtering and calibration methods to crop wild relatives of the genera Avena, Beta, Brassica and Medicago, which were the target genera of the PGR Secure project. The ecogeographical filtering method filters occurrence records, combining the spatial distribution of the target taxon on an ecogeographical land characterization map (ELC) with the ecogeographical characterization of those environments that are likely to impose selection pressure for the adaptive trait investigated. In the predictive characterization context, a taxon-specific ELC map is used, aiming at representing the adaptive scenarios that are present over the territory studied. The calibration method uses a training set with existing characterization and evaluation data for the trait of interest, together with ecogeographical data specific to the environment at the sites from where these accessions were collected, to identify existing relationships between the trait and the environment.
