Faecal-oral diseases.

This chapter focuses on the faecal-oral group of diseases that are transmitted by person-to-person contact, through water, food or directly to the mouth. These diseases include gastroenteritis, rotavirus infection, Cryptosporidium parvum infection, cholera, shigellosis, Giardia intestinalis infection, Entamoeba histolytica amoebiasis, typhoid/paratyphoid, hepatitis A and E, poliomyelitis, and Enterobius vermicularis infection. For each disease, the following information is provided: aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis, mode of transmission, incubation period, period of communicability, occurrence and distribution, control and prevention, treatment, and surveillance.
