CABI Book Chapter

The genetics of cattle.

Book cover for The genetics of cattle.

Description

This book contains 24 chapters covering various fields of genetics and biology of cattle. It serves as a reference book on cattle genetics for researchers, lecturers, students, farmers and specialists working in the industry. The first five chapters focus on systematics, phylogeny, domestication, breeds and factorial genetics of cattle. The next two chapters provide crucial information about the s...

Chapter 23 (Page no: 571)

Genetic aspects of cattle adaptation in the tropics.

This chapter examines the role of adaptation of beef cattle to the stressors of tropical environments and highlights the genetic basis of those traits and their relationships with productive attributes. The role of different genetic approaches (crossbreeding, within-breed selection and use of DNA-based technologies) in genetically improving the adaptation of cattle grazed in the tropics and subtropics is also discussed. Focus is given on the improvement of tropically adapted cattle (Bos indicus and tropically adapted taurine breeds) grazed in the tropics and subtropics. The role of molecular information in improving adaptive traits, particularly resistance to trypanosomiasis, bovine respiratory disease, heat stress, gastrointestinal nematodes (worms) and ticks, is also discussed.
