The genetics of cattle.

Book cover for The genetics of cattle.

Description

This book contains 24 chapters covering various fields of genetics and biology of cattle. It serves as a reference book on cattle genetics for researchers, lecturers, students, farmers and specialists working in the industry. The first five chapters focus on systematics, phylogeny, domestication, breeds and factorial genetics of cattle. The next two chapters provide crucial information about the s...

Chapter 2 (Page no: 19)

Genetic aspects of domestication.

The available data on the domestication and history of cattle are summarized in this chapter, including the appearance of phenotypes that today are the subject of genetic research. Focus is given on taurine cattle spread over the old world, zebus around the equator, large taurines during classical antiquity, small cattle in medieval Europe, modernization of cattle husbandry and industrial cattle, crossbreds and local breeds.
