This book, inclusive of 11 chapters, discusses current knowledge on the human microbial flora and microbiome, with emphasis given to the human intestinal microbiota. Initial chapters are devoted to the discussion of the specific microbial flora of the digestive tract, lungs, urogenital tract and skin, both during healthy and diseased states. The latter chapters are devoted specifically to the huma...

Chapter 8 (Page no: 124)

In vivo and animal models of the human gut microbiome.

This chapter describes current applications of in vivo animal models in studies related to the human gut microbiome, specifically those in the distal gut. These applications range from studying the biology of single host-associated microbial species to examining complete human communities containing hundreds of species transplanted into model hosts.
