Diseases of the neurological system.

This chapter covers the different neurological diseases of pigs, including the clinical signs, causative agents and treatment. Focus is given on neurological diseases caused by viruses (African swine fever, Aujeszky's disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, classical swine fever, eastern equine encephalitis, Japanese B encephalitis, rabies, swine vesicular disease, Talfan disease and Teschen disease), bacteria (abscesses, actinobacillosis, bowel oedema, Haemophilus parasuis meningitis, leptospirosis, listeriosis, middle ear infection, salmonellosis, streptococcal meningitis and tetanus) and protozoa (coccidiosis) as well as those affecting newborn piglets (barking piglets, congenital meningoencephalocoele, congenital tremors AI, AII, AIII, AIV, AV and type B, copper deficiency, hypoglycaemia, splayleg and vitamin A deficiency). Neuromuscular disease caused by heat stroke is also discussed.
