The genetics of the dog.

Book cover for The genetics of the dog.

Description

This second edition book presents a comprehensive description of all modern topics related to dog genetics from various scientists in the USA, Europe, Australia and Russia. The systematics, phylogeny, domestication and single gene traits are discussed in chapters 1-5, chapters 6-10 are on immunogenetics and genetic diseases, while chapters 11 and 12 presents gene mapping and genome structure of th...

Chapter 6 (Page no: 91)

Canine immunogenetics.

Access to genome sequences has rapidly driven studies into canine cytokines/chemokines and their receptors. An extensive number of canine cytokine/chemokine genes have now been characterized, and the level of polymorphism seen across breeds is now being established. It is likely that such studies will have a significant impact on understanding breed predisposition to and development of a number of immune-related diseases. The screening and diagnostic potentials of genetic testing for improving the health of existing dog breeds are increasingly obvious. The benefit of using immunogenetic studies in dog diseases as a comparative inroad into human conditions is now being increasingly recognized. Topics discussed are the overview of the major antigen receptors of the immune system; the major histocompatibility complex (MHC); T-cell receptors (TCRs) and other T-cell surface proteins; immunoglobulins; and dog cytokine and chemokine immunogenetics.
