Export vegetable supply chains and rural households in Senegal.

This chapter presents a synthesis of two studies on the welfare implications of the participation of rural households in Senegal in green bean and tomato export markets. Both case studies show that the growth in vegetable exports has contributed importantly to poverty reduction. In addition, it is shown that, while the inclusion of smallholder suppliers in high-value vegetable export chains certainly creates benefits for these farmers, the main poverty-reducing effects are attributable to the labour markets through the creation of employment accessible to the poorest rural households.
