Novel strategies for protecting mitochondria (the cellular powerhouse) against low-LET radiation: a review.

This book chapter focuses on novel strategies for protecting the mitochondria from ionizing radiation. It specifically highlights the radioprotective properties of plant extracts (of Asparagus racemosus, Podophyllum hexandrum, Hippophae rhamnoides). The properties of free radicals and their cellular localization are also summarized. Furthermore, the radiation effects on biomolecules and cell organelles, such as the mitochondria are discussed.
