International research on natural resource management: advances in impact assessment.

Book cover for International research on natural resource management: advances in impact assessment.

Description

This book is addressed to scientists, researchers, development specialists and policy makers who deal with natural resources and agriculture in the developing countries. It aims to (1) provide evidence of the impact of natural resource management research (NRMR) in the CGIAR; (2) establish a methodological foundation for impact assessments of NRMR; and (3) draw up a set of lessons for future impac...

Chapter 6 (Page no: 91)

CIAT. Impact of participatory natural resource management research in cassava-based cropping systems in Vietnam and Thailand.

This chapter assesses the impact of a participatory CIAT research project entitled 'Improving the Sustainability of Cassava-based Cropping Systems in Asia'. The main objective of this project was to develop better cassava production practices that would enhance the sustainability of production by helping farmers increase their revenue and by protecting the soil resource base from degradation as a result of nutrient depletion and erosion. Adoption and impact at the farm level in Thailand and Vietnam are estimated, as well as the rate of return on the research investment. The results indicate significant and positive impacts of project activities. The study also finds that there are additional benefits to participatory research activities that are not embodied in the adoption of soil conservation or fertility management techniques. The expected internal rate of return, based only on incremental cassava productivity gains, was estimated to be between 34% and 41%.
