Mood, emotions and food choice.

A brief discussion on the definition and characterization of mood and emotions is presented, including discussions on how mood and emotions are affected by particular foods (or food combinations) via sensory effects, associated social context, cognitive expectations, changes in appetite or nutritional modulation of brain function. Also, evidence on how sweet (or fatty) tastes may have an ability to influence mood is reviewed, as well as evidence on the influence of neural substrates, viz. benzodiazepine/GABA, dopamine and opioids on food choices. The physiological mechanisms behind emotional eating are discussed as well.
