Synthesis and recommendations for future research.

This paper provides information on the integrated concepts regarding the abiotic reactions and mechanisms regulating the dynamics of organic and inorganic phosphorus in the environment (e.g., water bodies, soil solution, and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems). On the contrary, despite some recent advances, the understanding on the role and fate of organic phosphorus in the environment remains rudimentary. It is necessary to address issues such as: the development of simple, robust techniques for identifying and quantifying organisms phosphorus in environmental samples; improved knowledge on the mechanisms of organic phosphorus transformations; development of scaling rules to address issues at one temporal or spatial scales to be applied at smaller or larger scales; and detailed investigations by which organisms access organic phosphorus compounds in the environment.
