Nutrient elements in grassland: soil-plant-animal relationships.

Book cover for Nutrient elements in grassland: soil-plant-animal relationships.

Description

This book deals with the concentrations and transformations of nutrient elements in soils, grassland plants and ruminants, particularly sheep and cattle. Data are restricted to those relevant to temperate grasslands. After an introductory chapter, the next 3 chapters deal with nutrient elements in soils, the uptake and concentration of nutrients in herbage, and nutrient elements in ruminant animal...

Chapter 9 (Page no: 220)

Micronutrient cations: iron, manganese, zinc, copper and cobalt.

The sources, availability and losses of micronutrients cations: iron, manganese, zinc, copper and cobalt, in grassland soils are presented. The uptake, functions, chemical forms, availability and distribution of these micronutrient cations in herbage plants and the factors (e.g., fertilizers (NPK) and lime plant species and variety, stage of maturity, season and weather and livestock excreta) influencing micronutrient cations content of herbage plants are discussed. The occurrence and metabolic and metabolic functions, absorption, nutritional requirement and effects of deficiencies of micronutrient cations in ruminant animals are examined. The transformations and quantitative balances of micronutrient cations in grassland systems are presented.
