Freshwater nematodes: ecology and taxonomy.

Book cover for Freshwater nematodes: ecology and taxonomy.

This book contains 22 chapters on various aspects of freshwater nematode ecology and taxonomy. Subjects covered include the techniques for processing freshwater nematodes, the composition and distribution of free living freshwater nematodes, their abundance, biomass and diversity, the production of freshwater nematodes, their feeding ecology, patterns in size structure of freshwater nematode commu...

Chapter 7 (Page no: 132)

Patterns in the size structure of freshwater nematode communities: the cases of lakes Königssee and Brunnsee, Germany.

This paper discusses the body size/body mass-population density relationship as well as the biomass-body size distribution of nematodes from Lake Königssee and Lake Brunnsee in Germany. Major points of Strayer [See Journal of the North American Benthological Society (1991) 10, 210-221] are validated, i.e. (1) the size structures of marine and freshwater zoobenthic communities differ greatly; (2) this difference may have an evolutionary origin because animals with life history traits of Warwick's [See Oecologia (1984) 61, 32-41] marine macrofaunal groups are scarce in freshwaters; and (3) lakes may differ in their zoobenthic size structures in response, at least, to differences in water chemistry.
