Managing movements of water, solutes and soil: from plot to landscape scale.

This paper focuses on the biophysical aspects of lateral water movement and its consequences for the movement of solutes and soil. Different types and arrangements of land use affecting these types of lateral flow are considered. The effects of spatial variation, belts of trees, short rotations, direct use of groundwater, and tree belts on hillsides on soil water balance, and the consequences of subsurface flows for nutrient transport are discussed. The key roles of soil cover and land use in reducing and controlling erosion and the consequences of runoff and infiltration on geological sediment are also examined. Two case studies are presented: (i) plot-level assessment of erosion (sediment yield and delivery and runoff) in Cikumutuk catchment, West Java, Indonesia; and (ii) optimal riparian forest width to control sediment yield in southeastern Brazil.
