Chapter 19 (Page no: 443)

Diseases of pineapple.

This chapter reviews the distribution, importance and control of diseases of pineapple (Ananas comosus) together with characteristics and production of the fruit. The fruit pathology of pineapple is complex due to the range of microorganisms on the exterior and interior of the developing inflorescence. Economically significant fruit diseases include black rot (caused by Ceratocystis paradoxa), fruit collapse (Erwinia chrysanthemi), fruitlet core rot (caused by a complex association of Penicillium funiculosum, Fusarium guttiforme, Candida guilliermondii, the pineapple fruit mite Steneotarsonemus ananas and the pineapple red mite Dolichotetranychus floridanus), fusariosis (Fusarium guttiforme), internal browning or black heart and marbling (caused by Acetobacter peroxydans, Acetobacter sp. and Pantoea ananatis). Pink disease can be a problem in canned products and is associated with the bacteria Pantoea citrea, Gluconobacter oxydans and Acetobacter aceti.
