Abstract

The immxinisation of hens with semen (intravenous injection) or a semen + adjuvant emulsion (intramuscular injection) did not significantly lower egg fertility for 2-7 days after insemination compared with that in non-immunised controls, but 8-14 days after insemination fertility was significantly...

Abstract

A method of semen collection by massage is described and illustrated. The method was effective in 80% of ♂♂ Ejaculate volume, semen pH and sperm concentration averaged 0.0073 ml., 7.2 and 1.447 x 106 per ml. resp. Spermatozoa lost their motility within 10-15 mins. of collection.-F.S.

Abstract

Over a long period, White Leghorn (W.L.), Barred Plymouth Rock (B.P.R.) and crossbred hens were repeatedly inseminated with semen from W.L., B.P.R. and White Cornish (W.C.) ♂♂. Egg fertility declined as the period of artificial breeding increased, particularly with W.C. ♂♂. Sperm agglutinin titre...

Abstract

Semen was easily collected by the massage method using a bird holder designed by the authors. A diagram of this, with measurements, is given. Data are tabulated on the semen characters of a White Holland ♂ over a 7-mth. period. Average values for ejaculate volume, sperm concentration per mm.3 and...

Abstract

White Leghorn and New Hampshire virgin pullets were naturally mated or artificially inseminated for a 3-wk. period. The number of pullets showing blood serum agglutination titres against spermatozoa was greater after mating than before. Birds which had an egg fertility > 90% throughout the year had ...

Abstract

Three methods for the manual induction of ejaculation in drakes are described and illustrated. The method of inseminating the duck is also described. The amount of semen per manually-induced ejaculate varied from 0. 1 to 1. 0 cm. 3 (av. 0. 32 cm. 3); pH was 6. 6-7. 8 (av. 7. 31), number of...

Abstract

Crosses between Muscovy (Cairina moschata) drakes and ordinary domestic ducks are a very important source of meat in Formosa, but the percentage of fertile eggs obtained from natural matings is not more than about 60. In an attempt to improve fertility in this cross, domestic ducks were...
