Abstract

The ability of a single intramuscular injection of Buserelin (GnRH-analogue) on day 5 after AI to improve pregnancy rates was investigated in a field study. A total of 700 dairy cows of different breeds (Simmental, Swiss Brown, Holstein) on 76 farms were studied. Only those cows presented for first ...

Abstract

There has been a steady decrease in the NR rate to 1st insemination of cows in Switzerland from a peak of >68% in 1981-82 to <65% in 1993-94, when 61, 21, 9 and 9% respectively of herds had a CR of >60, 50-60, 40-50 and <40% respectively. The deterioration in fertility is attributed to increasing milk yield, leading to health and fertility disorders. Possibilities of improving AI results by more stringent health controls of bulls and thorough checks of semen quality and the results of individual AI technicians are discussed.
