Abstract

AI with semen from 2 Landrace boars that had been stored for 22.6 years resulted in the birth of 10 and 9 piglets, respectively, from 2 sows 115-116 days later. AI with semen from another 3 boars that had been stored for 25-26 years did not result in pregnancy.

Abstract

Semen samples were collected from Holstein-Friesian bulls following injection of 30 or 60 mg PGF. Treatment increased sperm concentration by 21 and 44% for the 2 doses resp., and the number of spermatozoa per ejaculate by 23 and 45%, compared with untreated controls. Libido was unaffected.

Abstract

Semen samples were collected from Holstein-Friesian bulls following injection of 30 or 60 mg PGF. Compared with untreated controls, no difference in viability of spermatozoa or the frequency of acrosomal abnormalities in stored semen was detected. Significantly higher oxygen consumption by...

Abstract

Regression equations are given for estimating sperm concentration from spectrophotometer readings, and a table is given from which sperm concentration in diluted semen can be read off against spectrophotometer reading.

Abstract

Frozen boar semen from 12 boars (Landrace, Large White and Hampshire) were used to inseminate 23 sows or gilts of the same breeds. The ♀♀ were inseminated twice, at 1 and 11/2 days after the onset of standing oestrus. No difference was detected in the quality of semen used for sows which did or did ...

Abstract

The concentration of PGF2 alpha (determined by radioimmunoassay) in single samples of seminal plasma from 25 Holstein-Friesian bulls averaged 0.95 plus or minus 0.25 ng/ml (0.49-1.37). Seven bulls were injected intramuscularly with 30 or 60 mg PGF2 alpha on 2 occasions 3 days apart, and semen was...

Abstract

Frozen boar semen stored in plastic straws, imported from Canada and the USA, was compared with that produced in Japan for sperm viability and acrosome abnormalities. The US and Canadian semen gave 63±5 and 73±3 pellets per straw resp., 0.12 and 0.13 ml semen per pellet, and 3210±90 × 106 and...

Abstract

Thiamine, caffeine, catalase and PGF were added to the thawing solution. Thiamine and catalase did not affect sperm survival compared with an unsupplemented control group, although the addition of Tris plus citric acid, with or without PGF, or caffeine sodium benzoate gave a slower loss of...
