Hofmann (1935) submitted a proposal, using a timed mating and farrowing system to program the reproductive dates in a sow herd and thus to direct the breeding and production cycle taut. In 1958 to 1964, the developed system of periodic farrowing was operated in Thuringia first farms successfully...

Abstract

In 1989, in the German Democratic Republic, 86.9% of sows were inseminated. The av. CR was 80.7%, the number of liveborn piglets per litter averaged 10.48, and the number of piglets born alive per 100 inseminations averaged 846 vs. 80.4%, 10. 36 and 834 resp. in 1988. Data are tabulated by district.

Abstract

The paper examines the extent to which GDR piglet breeding units organized production on the basis of planned production cycle programmes in the period 1970-84. The analysis shows that production cycle programming increased at the same time as artificial insemination and the ability to manage...

Abstract

Of 1 803 600 sows inseminated in the German Democratic Republic in 1986, 80.4% conceived, and the number of liveborn piglets per sow farrowing and mated averaged 10.26 and 8.25 resp. Of 304 536 gilts and 648 393 sows with synchronized ovulation and inseminated at a predetermined date, 75.4 and...

Abstract

In 1985, in the German Democratic Republic, 1 913 706 sow inseminations were carried out, of which 1 787 477 were 1st inseminations; the number of inseminated ♀♀ represented 81.3% of the total population. The av. CR was 79.9%, the number of liveborn piglets per litter averaged 10.20 and the number...

Abstract

An account is given of the development since 1978 of artificial insemination of pigs at a large pig breeding unit (with a current population of>180 000, of which 9500 are breeding sows) in the German Democratic Republic. In 1985, for the 86.93% of ♀♀ which were inseminated, overall CR was 78.8%,...

Abstract

Data on 10 174 gilt and 22 675 sow inseminations at 2 pig breeding units in the German Democratic Republic were analysed. Compared with annual av. CRs, sows and gilts inseminated in the summer had significantly lower CRs (82.4 and 78.4 resp. at the 2 units), with 43 and 55% resp. of ♀♀ at the 2...

Abstract

Problems involved in the freezing and thawing of boar semen and the timing of insemination are discussed with reference to the literature and the authors' own work. Because of disappointing CRs and litter sizes compared with those when using fresh semen, only restricted use of frozen semen is...

The CR of inseminated sows was 77.3%, and litter size at birth and weaning averaged 10.5 and 9.9 piglets resp. Semen from progeny-tested boars was used for 84.7% of 1st ...
