Abstract

In 1989, in the German Democratic Republic, 86.9% of sows were inseminated. The av. CR was 80.7%, the number of liveborn piglets per litter averaged 10.48, and the number of piglets born alive per 100 inseminations averaged 846 vs. 80.4%, 10. 36 and 834 resp. in 1988. Data are tabulated by district.

Abstract

The Soviet and German literature on this subject is reviewed. At Dummerstorf-Rostock, the addition of 4-5 IU oxytocin to the semen ampoule immediately before insemination has led to an improvement of 5-7% in pregnancy rate and 0.2-0.4 in litter size.

In the German Democratic Republic, 659 459 first inseminations were carried out in 1973. The 7 boars providing the highest number of insemination doses each provided 1602-1951 doses. Live litter size at birth averaged 9.4 v 9.3 in 1972.
