Abstract

Data were analysed on the results of 25 215 first inseminations carried out over a 3-year period at 13 farms, the traits recorded being pregnancy rate, litter size and the number of piglets born per 100 first inseminations. Environmental temperature and hours of sunlight daily were recorded in the...

Abstract

Data on 16 383 sows and gilts in which ovulation was synchronized by means of treatment with gonadotropins prior to 2 inseminations, irrespective of signs of oestrus, were analysed. For ♀♀ injected with Gonavet 56 h after PMSG treatment, CR was 79.7%, litter size at birth averaged 11.03 piglets,...

In 1989, in the German Democratic Republic, 86.9% of sows were inseminated. The av. CR was 80.7%, the number of liveborn piglets per litter averaged 10.48, and the number of piglets born alive per 100 inseminations averaged 846 vs. 80.4%, 10. 36 and 834 resp. in 1988. Data are tabulated by district.

Abstract

The paper examines the extent to which GDR piglet breeding units organized production on the basis of planned production cycle programmes in the period 1970-84. The analysis shows that production cycle programming increased at the same time as artificial insemination and the ability to manage...

Abstract

Of sows inseminated in 1986 in the German Democratic Republic, 11.0, 31.5 and 57.5% resp. were inseminated at spontaneous oestrus, at induced oestrus or at a predetermined time following treatment designed to induce oestrus. For gilts and sows inseminated at a predetermined time, the CR was 75.4...

Abstract

In 1985, in the German Democratic Republic, 1 913 706 sow inseminations were carried out, of which 1 787 477 were 1st inseminations; the number of inseminated ♀♀ represented 81.3% of the total population. The av. CR was 79.9%, the number of liveborn piglets per litter averaged 10.20 and the number...

Abstract

In a trial involving 9034 and 8721 first inseminations of gilts + sows at 21 breeding stations, the addition of oxytocin to semen did not significantly affect CR or litter size. When the data were analysed separately according to parity, multiparous sows inseminated with semen + oxytocin showed a...

Abstract

Of 450 572 sows treated and fixed-time inseminated in 1979, 78.5% conceived and 75.3% farrowed vs. 71.4 and 67.2% resp. of 229 327 similarly treated gilts. Litter size at farrowing and weaning averaged 10.8 and 10.2 resp. for sows, and 9.3 and 8.9 for gilts. Details are given of 8 methods of...

Abstract

Data on 51 731 gilts and 120 093 sows, inseminated in 1977 and 1978, were analysed. 85% of sows were inseminated 4-5 days after weaning. Females exhibiting oestrus after a short cycle exhibited the standing reflex for longer than those with a late oestrus. Methods of diagnosing oestrus are...
