Abstract

Of 50 sows in Switzerland, inseminated in 1993 with frozen-thawed semen from 9 Swiss Edelschwein, 4 Swiss Improved Landrace and 3 Duroc boars, 54, 67 and 60% respectively conceived, and the number of liveborn piglets per sow averaged 9.8, 6.2 and 10.0; the traits were significantly affected by boar.

Abstract

The effects of the interval between insemination with frozen semen and ovulation on conception rate in pigs are discussed, and details are given of the use of ultrasonics for the detection of ovulation. Of sows (16-24 per group) inseminated with frozen semen >8, 4-8 or <4 h before ovulation or 0-4 h after ovulation, 0, 70.8, 100 and 68.8% respectively conceived.
