Abstract

Data are given on Dutch Black Pied (DBP) and Meuse-Rhine-Yssel (MRY) heifers inseminated in 1976/77 at 14 and 11 farms resp. For 206 DBPs, age at 1st insemination averaged 489.7 days; the CR to all inseminations was 87.9%. The proportion of pregnant females which had conceived to 1st, 2nd, 3rd or...

Abstract

Special reference is made to the present position and future role of A.I. in pig breeding in the Netherlands. Although at present only about 11% of all services are by A.I., some of the best pigs have been sired by A.I. boars.

Abstract

About 10-11% of Dutch pigs (25% in Overijssel) are artificially inseminated. The different requirements of the breeder and the commercial producer are indicated, and factors affecting conception rate (such as the boar, the inseminator and the stage of oestrus) are discussed.
