Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma levels of LH (luteinizing hormone), heat symptoms and the quality of the corpora lutea after different synchronisation protocols in Brown-Swiss dairy cows under the objective of a fixed artificial insemination date (IATF). The study was performed within...

Abstract

The ability of a single intramuscular injection of Buserelin (GnRH-analogue) on day 5 after AI to improve pregnancy rates was investigated in a field study. A total of 700 dairy cows of different breeds (Simmental, Swiss Brown, Holstein) on 76 farms were studied. Only those cows presented for first ...

Abstract

From 1 July 1996 to 30 June 1997, 1 142 000 inseminations were carried out in Switzerland, using semen from Simmental, Swiss Brown, Holstein, Limousin and Aberdeen-Angus bulls. Semen from bulls of beef breeds was used for >300 000 inseminations, representing an increase of 22% over the previous...

Abstract

An account is given of the estimation of breeding values for milk yield, milking rate and body conformation in Swiss Brown herdbook cows and bulls in Switzerland in 1995. For cows inseminated with semen from 185 AI bulls, the average gestation period was 289.3 days, the percentage of liveborn...

Abstract

In 1994 there were 259 946 Swiss Brown herdbook cattle in Switzerland, of which 4022 were bulls, and herd size averaged 15.4. Details are given of progeny testing for milk yield, ease of milking and body conformation, and of artificial insemination.

Abstract

There has been a steady decrease in the NR rate to 1st insemination of cows in Switzerland from a peak of >68% in 1981-82 to <65% in 1993-94, when 61, 21, 9 and 9% respectively of herds had a CR of >60, 50-60, 40-50 and <40% respectively. The deterioration in fertility is attributed to increasing milk yield, leading to health and fertility disorders. Possibilities of improving AI results by more stringent health controls of bulls and thorough checks of semen quality and the results of individual AI technicians are discussed.

Abstract

In 1991, in Switzerland, there were 780 000 Swiss Brown cattle (41% of the total cattle population of Switzerland), of which 255 422 were herdbook animals. For adult bulls and cows, the average height at withers was 155-165 and 138-148 cm respectively, and body weight was 1000-1300 and 600-750 kg....
