Abstract

Six lots each consisting of 9 Broad Breasted Bronze turkey hens were artificially inseminated during the 1950 breeding season. In the first 2 lots semen was undiluted; in the other 4, a synthetic diluent containing 60 mg. % fructose was used at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hrs. after collection. Mean hatch of...

Abstract

The motility and fertilising capacity of White Leghorn spermatozoa were enhanced when stored under gaseous air or nitrogen at 21 atm for 7 h at 11 deg C. Fertilising capacity was totally destroyed when semen was stored under gaseous oxygen or carbon dioxide at 21 atm for 7 h at 11 deg C.

Abstract

Four controlled experiments designed to examine aspects of reproductive response in Broad-Breasted males were conducted. 24 males and 168 females were used to evaluate the use of low sperm concentration (30.6 X 106 spermatozoa/AI dose) and examine the relationship of semen characters to fertilising ...

Abstract

Competitive fertilization in turkeys was investigated; microsatellite genotyping was used to determine male parentage. Evidence was obtained that sperm mobility influences the reproductive performance of male turkeys. Sperm mobility is composed of several parameters including sperm motility....

Abstract

In the absence of commercially viable methods for cryopreserving turkey spermatozoa, new processing methods are required to extend the functional life of stored turkey spermatozoa for artificial insemination. The present study evaluates the efficacy of a new extender (Turkey Semen Extend) and...

AbstractFull Text

Cryopreservation of domestic animal spermatozoa has been widely used for artificial insemination and egg yolk is one of the most commonly used cryoprotectants during the freezing-thawing process. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of different duck egg yolk (DEY)...

Abstract

Cryopreservation methods for poultry semen are not reliable for germplasm preservation, especially for turkeys, where fertility rates from frozen/thawed semen are particularly low. The objective was to evaluate cryopreservation methods for effectiveness in promoting cryosurvival and post-thaw...

Abstract

Glycerol (GLY) and egg yolk (EY) are good cryoprotectants of avian and mammalian sperm, but in birds, they strongly inhibit the eventual fertilization of ova. Using the sperm penetration (SP-holes) assay and fertility trials, the present study investigates (1) the possible mechanism by which this...
