Chapter 6 (Page no: 81)

Kinetic behaviour and athletic performance.

The horse has evolved as a cursorial herbivore. As such, much of its behaviour and physiology had adapted to be capable of large periods of low level activity such as walking and browsing interspersed with short bouts of high speed activity. These evolutionary adpatations have suited the horse firstly as work or draft animal and in more recent years, use in equstrian sport. These facts are considered in this chapter in managing the horse and using it in sport.
