CABI organises agricultural research design course in China

CABI organises agricultural research design course in China

CABI organised a three-day course on experimental design and statistical data analysis at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS) in Beijing on 25 to 27 October 2017.

The course helps students to develop a sound design for studies in the area of agricultural research which is essential to obtain high quality data for publications and theses. Basics in statistical data analysis were taught to aid participants in the accurate interpretation of data to avoid errors in their conclusions.

This year’s course was attended by 24 MSc and PhD students from China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nepal, Germany, and Iran. It was delivered by CABI expert Dirk Babendreier, a visiting Professor at the Institute of Plant Protection in CAAS where the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture-CABI joint laboratory is also located.

Half of the course was presented as interactive lectures, with the remaining half delivered as hands-on practical exercises to develop objectives, hypotheses and treatments, blocking designs and more. Presentations and discussions within the group work also provided an important knowledge sharing opportunity.

At the end of the course, students were required to take an examination to complete the course. This was the third time the course was organised and it will run again in late 2018.
