Improving lives by solving problems in agriculture and the environment

Mould contamination

We are the only UK laboratory accredited by UKAS for on-site mould-contamination testing. We can investigate a full range of fungal contamination problems in both home and workplace environments. Our surveys include building exteriors, interiors and contents. We can also sample objects from machinery to valuable artefacts. All fungi taken from the survey are identified to species level and we provide a full report, including remediation advice where appropriate.

Sampling for fungal spores We take air samples to determine the quantity and diversity of fungal spores as part of our on-site sampling or as a stand-alone service.

We then:

identify the fungi

screen the samples for specific organisms such as Aspergillus fumigatus

provide quantitative data compared to the outside environment

We can provide one-off sampling, or undertake monitoring programmes.

If your budget is tight, a more economical but less comprehensive alternative to the site survey is our fungal sampling kit. The kit allows you to take your own samples for us to identify. We provide you with sampling equipment and full instructions – you simply send your samples to us in the post and in return we will provide you with a report on the main species of fungus identified. This test is useful for small areas of contamination, or as a preliminary investigation before a full site survey.

To monitor levels of micro-organisms in the air use our environmental monitoring kit which gives you everything you need to record the microbial activity in your chosen location.

You can either use the kit to carry out your own investigations or send it back to us where we can:

  • provide you with total counts of fungi and bacteria, allowing you to assess the quantity of micro-organisms in the atmosphere and compare with other areas in the building or outside
  • scan for specific organisms such as Aspergillus fumigatus or Stachybotrys chartarum
  • have a detailed identification to species level of the predominant organism, or of all viable organisms grown from the kit

All the organisms that are identified to species level are backed up with detailed notes including health implications, Hazard Group status, common hosts, toxin production etc.
