Improving lives by solving problems in agriculture and the environment

CAB Thesaurus and GACS

In September 2016 at the GODAN (Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition initiative) summit in New York, CABI CEO, Dr Trevor Nicholls detailed how CABI will collaborate with organizations like the USDA to create a Global Agricultural Concept Scheme, linking agricultural descriptive frameworks to build an open data resource, based on CAB Thesaurus.

CAB Thesaurus is an invaluable aid for database users and has many potential uses by individuals and organizations indexing their own information resources for both internal use and on the Internet. CAB Thesaurus has been available to browse as an Open Access resource, and organizations will soon be able to access the thesaurus descriptions via an API.

CAB Thesaurus provides a comprehensive descriptive framework for the world’s science and technical information, maps to the Global Agricultural Concept Scheme, and via that resource to FAO’s AGROVOC and the NAL Thesaurus. Together they provide a semantic backbone for a data ecosystem for agriculture.
