Abstract

Distribution, biology and control of the zebra mussel - Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771).

Abstract

Known and not so, Dreissena polymorpha has been nominated as one of the causes of the "worst" world invasion. The current review summarize information on biology and flexible mechanism for survival defining aggressive spread of zebra mussels. Methods for detection and control are described. The ability of mussels to accumulate various organic pollutants, reduce the level of eutrophication and to improve water purity by positive results from their presence, are unable to suppress the negative effects on structures related to the dams. Early detection of Dreissena polymorpha in water ponds assure a period from 3 to 5 years to take appropriate measures before the population of the species Dreissena sp. reach sufficient intensity to cause damage to various hydro.
