Miscellaneous
Cultivated plants of Southern Africa: botanical names, common names, origins, literature.
Abstract
Almost 9000 kinds of plants known to be cultivated in Southern Africa, or to have been tried here, are listed. The information is derived from a database containing details mainly of specimens archived in the National Herbarium, Pretoria, South Africa, but also including records of specimens kept in numerous other collections in the region. Each entry in the checklist includes the scientific name and approximate place of origin of the plant, and common names where known. Where a plant is widely known by a name other than the correct one, the synonym is given and referenced to the correct name. For each genus and family references are given to literature that has been found useful for identifications in the National Herbarium.
