Miscellaneous
Australian trees and shrubs: species for land rehabilitation and farm planting in the tropics.
Abstract
This is an extensively revised and enlarged version of a book published in 1986 by ACIAR (Multipurpose Australian trees and shrubs: lesser-known species for fuelwood and agroforestry, edited by Turnbull, J. W.). The revision has been undertaken by CSIRO Forestry and Forest products scientists. New species have been added, and monographs of species noticed in the earlier edition revised and updated. Species of greatest potential have 2-4 pages of text each, while minor or little known species have quarter-page treatments. While the original book focused on the lesser known species, this one also includes better known and more widely planted species. New colour photographs are also included to illustrate habit. The book has 5 introductory chapters (also revised) which support the species descriptions which follow. The 5 chapters are: (1) The Australian environment (Brown, A. G.; Turnbull, J. W.; Booth, T. H.); (2) Australian vegetation (Turnbull, J. W.); (3) Selection of species and provenances for planting (Boland, D. J.); (4) Seed, nursery practice and establishment (Doran, J. C.); and (5) Introduction to the species' digests (Doran, J. C.; Turnbull, J. W.; Martensz, P. N.; Thomson, L. A. J.; Hall, N.) - including a table summarizing data on all the species covered. There are species' digests for 112 major species and 52 minor species. The digests for the main species contain information on the main attributes of the species, botanical and common names, family, botanical features, natural occurrence (in Australia, including latitude and altitude), climate, physiography and soils, vegetation type, utilization, silvicultural features (including provenance trials), pests and diseases, limitations, and related species. The shorter digests for the minor species contain information on uses, a description, distribution (in Australia), climate, soils, growth, and further information sources.
