Abstract

Vegetative propagation of adult trees of acacia hybrid (Acacia auriculiformis × Acacia mangium).

Abstract

Nine of these hybrids (which had outstanding growth) were identified in a 20-acre patch of plantations of Acacia auriculiformis and Acacia mangium in the Harbang Forest Area of Bangladesh. The hybrids had outstanding growth compared with a sister population of A. auriculiformis. Cuttings were collected from 2 of the hybrids following partial or complete felling at 30 cm above ground to initiate sprout production. The stump of the completely felled tree was covered with sand for stooling. Sprouts developed within 12 wk. They were collected, treated with 50 or 100 ppm IBA (or not treated) and placed in sand rooting medium under intermittent mist. Rooting occurred within 2-3 wk, and was 70-95% in treated cuttings, and 40-55% in untreated cuttings.
